Witham Running Club was formed in 1983 to support those who want to train, race and run for fun, on and off road. We are based at Bramston Sports Centre in Witham and we now have over 200 members. We have a thriving juniors section and our ratio of ladies to men is about 45:55.
More information is in the "About Us" section in the menu on the left.
Harwich 5K Race 1
lorraine writes "We had a Witham runner first past the post on Thursday night in the first race of the Harwich Handicap 5K series.
Naomi Emerick finished 24th in 32:56 and Claire Blake broke her PB, set a new one of 29:35 and finish FIRST!!!!!
So well done, to both Claire and Naomi - next race in the handicap should be interesting."
lorraine writes "I've just received this email, just in case anybody is interested in doing Run to the Beat for the charity:
Headway Essex provides vital support to improve the lives of people who have survived a brain injury and provide support to their families and carers. To help raise funds for our services we have secured places on this year’s Run to The Beat Event, which will be held on Sunday October 28th, starting from the O2 Arena in London. All public places to this event sold out within 32 days and there are very few charity places left.
Please could you publicise this e-mail to the members of your club who you feel may be interested. This is a great event suitable for new runners just progressing from 5k and 10k events and looking to do their first half marathon. .
To secure a guaranteed place with the Headway Essex Team, we ask for a *non-refundable registration fee of £35 and the applicants pledge to try and raise a minimum of £200 for Headway Essex, to help us provide services and support for survivors of brain injury and their families.
We will supply sponsorship forms, guidance on setting up a just giving page, an information pack and Headway literature and a Headway Essex running vest. We offer all our runners lots of moral support and encouragement!
If you would like one of the places, please contact Joanne Hockey as soon as possible on 01206 547616, or by emailing joanne.hockey@headwayessex.org.uk,
lorraine writes "Leo Cole is definitely back from injury as on Tuesday evening he started his Phoenix 5K series with 6th place in a 'modest' time (Leo's terms!) of 22:05 on a rather muddy and hilly course!"
Keeping it local this week with destination Heybridge.
For the 9.00 crew, route options are Tiptree, Aberton reservoir and Goldhanger, with various route options this offers, or Ranks Green, Terling, up to North Hill and Maldon to arrive at Heybridge for around 11am.
10am option with a shorter ride direct to Heybridge from Kelvedon via Totham.
The regulars will know these routes but if you do intend joining us for the first time, please contact me if you want further information. Use the link in the Contact Us page on the left.
lorraine writes "While many of our members were taking part in the Halstead Marathon or manning the water station, 3 of our members Rach O’Connor, Neil Lawrence and Paul Langridge had taken off to Highland Perthshire in Scotland to take part in L’Etape Caledonia, a challenging 81 mile cycle race on roads closed to traffic. The race starts and finishes in Pitlochry and takes in the stunning scenery around there, Aberfeldy, Loch Rannoch & Loch Tummel – and includes the small matter of a 2.1km Category 4 climb which probably makes our mighty North Hill seem like a stroll.
If that doesn’t sound tough enough, our peletonistas advise gale force winds and torrential rain made it very hard work. Rach was involved in a mini pile up during the mountain climb, emerging a bit bruised but okay, Paul was almost taken out by another cyclist but survived with Neil seemingly managing to escape any drama.Despite all thrown at them, they all completed the course within the very tight cut off time - Rach finished in 6.11 with Neil & Paul finishing in 6.21.
Surprise surprise, they all plan to do it again next year and take a bunch of us along as well!!!!
lorraine writes "Leo Cole has been out injured for the last few months so it's good to see that he's now recovered and up for the challenge again!
Leo's was back in action at Sunday's Bluebell 5 which he completed in 36:11, coming 26th out of a field of about 220 - pretty impressive as this was only his second run since getting injured. And his thoughts on the race .... 'I would recommend the event - a very scenic trail run - demanding and undulating but fun (well, sort of!)'"
lorraine writes "Just received this invite (if you want a postal entry form please email me via the Contact Us page):
Stowmarket Strider's would like to invite your club members to take part in Stowmarket Striders Friday 5 race which is on the 8th June at 7:45pm and we would be grateful if you could pass this on to your members.
The race is completely traffic free, held in the beautiful park grounds of Haughley Park.
Entry can be online at www.stowmarketstriders.org.uk where you will also find all the race details or I have attached the postal entry form to this email.
We hope to see everyone at the race and if you have any queries in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact us via this email address (stowmarketstriders@gmail.com).
Please circulate the following information to club members interested in a new challenge for 2012. Entries close on 30th June (and with just 4 months left to train !) this is the last chance to enter this iconic race.
Trans Britain is run to generate funds for the UK registered charity Teach Africa. Reported by previous entrants as the “experience of a lifetime”. We start in Scotland at the cave where Robert the Bruce hid from the English and follow some of the most beautiful trails the UK has to offer through the Lake District and North Yorkshire before finishing in North Wales at a historic castle. (see www.gobeyondultra.co.uk/events and look for the 6 day Ultra for more information and to enter)
The run is intended for all abilities with the last runners home taking more than 12 hours on the longest day. Anyone who has finished a marathon certainly has the required fitness level to complete this challenge.
All competitors receive one of the best quality running tops we have come across, free race mementos and the invitation to join us at the celebration banquet at Ruthin Castle.
A range of payment options exist including a FREE ENTRY raising money for Teach Africa. I hope to welcome some of your club at this inspirational race.
lorraine writes "James Farren dusted off his marathon legs and had a day out at Alton Water for the Alton Water 10K.
This event seems to get bigger each year - there's plenty to keep the family entertained (BBQs, stalls, bouncy castle, etc.) and this year it sported a celebrity starter as well with Griff Rhys Jones getting the runners on their way.
Unfortunately, the course is still as hilly as ever but that didn't stop James putting in a sterling effort to finish 6th in 37:51 (and 2nd in the 40+ age group). James' 12 year old son Joel competed in the under 17 5K event and finished in 24th place with a brilliant time of 20:47."
