L'Etape Caledonia

While many of our members were taking part in the Halstead Marathon or manning the water station, 3 of our members Rach O'Connor, Neil Lawrence and Paul Langridge had taken off to Highland Perthshire in Scotland to take part in L'Etape Caledonia, a challenging 81 mile cycle race on roads closed to traffic. The race starts and finishes in Pitlochry and takes in the stunning scenery around there, Aberfeldy, Loch Rannoch & Loch Tummel - and includes the small matter of a 2.1km Category 4 climb which probably makes our mighty North Hill seem like a stroll.

If that doesn't sound tough enough, our peletonistas advise gale force winds and torrential rain made it very hard work. Rach was involved in a mini pile up during the mountain climb, emerging a bit bruised but okay, Paul was almost taken out by another cyclist but survived with Neil seemingly managing to escape any drama.Despite all thrown at them, they all completed the course within the very tight cut off time - Rach finished in 6.11 with Neil & Paul finishing in 6.21.

Surprise surprise, they all plan to do it again next year and take a bunch of us along as well!!!!

Bluebell 5

Leo Cole has been out injured for the last few months so it's good to see that he's now recovered and up for the challenge again!

Leo's was back in action at Sunday's Bluebell 5 which he completed in 36:11, coming 26th out of a field of about 220 - pretty impressive as this was only his second run since getting injured. And his thoughts on the race .... 'I would recommend the event - a very scenic trail run - demanding and undulating but fun (well, sort of!)'

Alton Water 10K

James Farren dusted off his marathon legs and had a day out at Alton Water for the Alton Water 10K.

This event seems to get bigger each year - there's plenty to keep the family entertained (BBQs, stalls, bouncy castle, etc.) and this year it sported a celebrity starter as well with Griff Rhys Jones getting the runners on their way.

Unfortunately, the course is still as hilly as ever but that didn't stop James putting in a sterling effort to finish 6th in 37:51 (and 2nd in the 40+ age group). James' 12 year old son Joel competed in the under 17 5K event and finished in 24th place with a brilliant time of 20:47.
